Curls Understood Subscription [May] Box Review

About a month ago I decided to subscribe to the Curls Understood box because their theme for May was “moisture”. This was something that was lacking in my hair, especially with summer coming. Side note: my hair is a 3c curl type/bleached/colored.

The box came and spent the last month testing each product and seeing which worked with my hair. These are the products that the box contained according to the survey I took for my hair issues and type.

Braid, Weave, Protective Style & Scalp Leave-in Spray w/ Tea Tree & Peppermint

NAOKEIDOE NATURALS, 8.2 oz. Retails @ $8.95

Ingredients : Distilled purified water, : alcohol, rice bran oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, stearalkonium chloride, glycerin, nettle, horsetail, chamomile, neem extracts, peppermint essential oil, tea tree essential oil, propylene glycol and diazolidinyl urea and iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (paraben free preservative).

Review: This product left my hair feeling really moisturized and smelled nice. It smells like tea tree oil (so if you’re not a fan of that smell, I wouldn’t recommend this to you). I used this product for a twist out that I did last week and it definitely left my hair feeling soft and moisturized. I also used it for several wash-n-go’s and it’s really great because it works as a 2 in 1 (leave-in conditioner and oil (from the L.O.C method)). I went to class, ran some errands, and despite the humidity, my hair was left hydrated. Just don’t forget to shake the bottle before use because the ingredients separate.

Deluxe Hair Pomade

NAOKEIDOE NATURALS, 4 oz. Retails @ $11.95

Ingredients: Organic extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, castor oil, beeswax, organic extra virgin coconut oil, organic unrefined shea butter, essential oil and/or fragrance.

Review: First off, this products smells so good. It’s refreshing and not too heavy on my hair.I used this for my edges and for a twist out. It’s a thick consistency (hence the name) but it worked with styling my hair. I could not get enough with the smell! It little ingredients, it’s a great product.

More Moisture Cream

Bask & Bloom Essentials, 2 oz. Retails @ $6

Ingredients: Distilled water infused with Slippery Elm (leaves hair soft and manageable), Sea Kelp (Mineral rich, conditions and strengthens), Horsetail (rejuvenates hair follicles), Orange Peel (makes hair soft, shine and manageable), Marshmallow Root (natural moisturizer, hydrates hair and scalp, rich in proteins and vitamins A and C), Aloe Vera Juice. Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol (Conditioning Emulsifier) Aloe Vera Extract, Raw Shea Butter, Cupuacu Butter, Rosehip Oil, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Vitamin E, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate (food grade preservative) and Essential Oil Blend for Fragrance.

Review: This has become my go to hair product when I do my hair in the morning and want to revive my curls. This products smells delicious and is the right consistency for a cream. Not too thick or thin. It leaves my curls hydrated for the day (with 80% humidity outside/ 80/90 degree weather) and my hair smelled great.  I will definitely be buying more of this product. I can’t get enough of it.

Curly Hair Custard

Moptop Hair, 0.5 oz. Retails @ $1.50

Ingredients: Aloe Baradensis Leaf Extract, Glycerin, Carboxymethylcellulose, Pectin, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Honey, Silk Amino Acids, Hypnea Musciformis Extract, Gelidiela Acerose Extract, Sargassum Filpendula Extract, Rosmarinus Officialis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Salix Alba (Williow) Bark Extract, Urtica (Nettle) Extract, Sorbitol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Phthalate free).

Review: This was the first time using a custard on my hair because I ALWAYS use gel (ECO Styler Gel). I loved the “runny” texture because it distributed easily on my hair. I loved the fruity smell as well, definitely a plus. It definitely defined my curls and didn’t make my hair feel stiff or weighed down. This is also aa great product for re-defining 3 or 4 day curls. Also, I loved that this brand is free of sulfates, parabens, dyes, phthalates, and insoluble silicones.

Leave-in Conditioner

Moptop Hair, 0.5 oz. Retails @ $1.50

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Glycerin, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Honey, Polysorbate 20, Polyquaternium-10, Silk Amino Acids, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Hair Keratin Amino Acids, Lactic Acid, Saccharum Officinarum (sugarcane) Extract, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Panthenol, Polyquaternium-4, Methoxy Peg/Ppg-7/3 Aminopropyl Dimethicone, Cetrimonium Chloride, Butylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid, Tetrasodium Edta, Citric Acid, Fragrance.

Review: This product should definitely be used with the custard.  loved the consistency of this product (in comparison to the spray leave-in conditioner). It had a nice smell just like the leave-in conditioner. It left my hair moisturized, which was a plus because I have bleached hair. I would definitely recommend this product to a friend of all hair types. I liked that the ingredients weren’t harmful for my hair either.

Smoothing Serum (not shown)

Curlfriends, 2.1 fl. oz. Retails @ $20.75

Ingredients: Proplylene Glycol, Water, Dimethicone, Hexylene Glycol, Cyclopenthasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Phenyl Trimethicone, Polyacrylamide, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Laureth-7, Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride, Dmdm Hydantoin, Fragrance. Contains no alcohol or artificial color.

Review: I loved using this product in the morning when I’m rushing to leave and don’t want to spend a lot of time on my hair. The frizz in my hair is controlled and I have shine as well. It’s a light oil so it doesn’t weigh my hair down either. But it is on the pricey size for such a small bottle.

Overall, I loved the products that came in this box. Thank you CurlsUnderstood!
